Life in the aquarium
I
love to watch fish in an aquarium; as long as
they're not mine. I can't keep fish. They always seem to die when I get some. Anyway, I had a friend in
the mountains that had a nice big aquarium with a bunch of different kinds of fish in it and I used to
love to go over there and watch her fish swim. It just fascinated me. She had a lot of props in her tank that
the fish could move around in. It was almost like its own little city.
A
s I would watch it, I noticed that the all the fish went about the tank doing
their own thing. Some would swim through the shipwreck model while others would weave their way in and
through the various plants that were in the tank. It was a large 200 gallon tank so there was plenty to do in there,
it would seem. But I also noticed that not all of the fish were moving around exploring the tank and doing things to
keep busy. In fact, some of them would just hang out near the bottom, hidden by some plants and not really
do anything at all except come up to eat when she fed them. Then they'd settle back into their little hiding
place and do nothing. That has got to be so boring and meaningless.
I
think sometimes, we have Christians that are similar to those
fish. Some will move around always staying busy and doing stuff to keep from being boring; and others
will just sit down and be comfortable doing absolutely nothing but be fed and then not put that feeding to use.
T
here's no shortage of things that need to be done to further God's
Kingdom. Just look around your local church. I bet you will find much work to be done but few workers to do it.
Of course, you could just sit on the bottom and do nothing but that seems awfully
boring. Remember the parable of good stewardship: if you do nothing with what God gives you, He'll give
it to someone who will do something.
